"We are Takoma" - American Feud

"American Feud: A History of Conservatives and Liberals"

Film and Discussion with Filmmakers Richard Hall and Simone Fary

Thursday, March 10, 2011

7:30 pm

Takoma Park Auditorium, 7500 Maple Avenue, Takoma Park MD

FREE EVENT

An entire political science course in 90 minutes, "American Feud" is the first documentary to trace the history of Liberalism and Conservatism in the United States. Designed to appeal to people of all interests and temperaments, from the impassioned to the merely curious, "American Feud" explores the back story of a political system seemingly in crisis. Interviews with a variety of distinguished and, sometimes, controversial figures, such as Noam Chomsky, G. Gordon Liddy, Howard Zinn, Kevin Phillips, and Michael Kazin, among others, offer a nuanced picture of how two political philosophies have changed over time. The film challenges us to revisit certain "outdated" ideas, which prevent us, the filmmakers argue, from having good government now and in the future.

Takoma Park Auditorium, 7500 Maple Avenue, Takoma Park MD

FREE EVENT

A celebration of International Women's Day with a special screening of "Breaking through the Clouds: The First Women’s National Air Derby."

The film chronicles the story of 20 women (of whom Amelia Earhart was only one) who raced across the United States in 1929 over a nine-day span to prove that women could fly. Facing cultural stereotypes, mechanical failures, navigational challenges and endless chicken dinners in every stop along the way, the women became pioneering legends in aviation. Following the screening, filmmaker Heather Taylor will answer questions about the content the film, as well as the process of making it.

The program is co-sponsored by Docs in Progress, Women in Film, Video-DC and the City of Takoma Park.

Liz Briones, Pam Parker, Karla Chisholm and Susan Faucon are the Dames of Killer Stilts. These spectacular Divas sing, squabble and laugh out loud about Beauty, Money, Sex, Love and conspiracy...lots of thought provoking, irreverent and musical conversation. With Ro Cube on Keys, Wardell Howell on Bass and Eric Haskins on Drums, these 6 accomplished musicians perform a diverse collection of original jazz, funk, blues and pop blended with provocative dialogue, a large dollop of humor and the meaning of life as seen through the eyes of three crazy dames.

Killer Stilts is a new project founded and written by musician and playwright, Susan Faucon. This new genre, coined by Faucon, Theatrical Jazz, is a blend of original music and scripted dialogue, not to be confused with musical theatre. What distinguishes this genre from traditional musical theatre is that it is performed like any concert might be with the added element of scripted dialogue interlaced between songs to share a storyline. Killer Stilts does not offer a storyline necessarily, it offers a line of ideas, and a conversation between 3 women sharing about beauty, love, sex and what goes on in the minds of contemporary women.

Killer Stilts has some of the greatest musicianship Washington DC has to offer. Its players have performed individually and together at some of the best known venues in the Metropolitan area including and not limited to Strathmore Hall, Blues Alley, Signature Theatre, Germano's Cabaret, Bohemian Caverns, Twins Jazz, Rams Head, State Theatre, Kennedy Center, Madams Organ, Chesapeake Arts Center, York Theatre, Silver Spring Stage and Dreamwrights Theatre. Winner of the 2010 WAMMIE award for Cabaret Artist!

"It's not just a way of life, it's an explosive reaction against the tension of living in an insane century," says Peter Case. Song writer and guitarist, Case has had a wide-ranging career ranging from new wave music to folk rock to solo acoustic performance. He is the rare songwriter who's considered life from all its angles and hasn't flipped yet, though he'll be the first to admit that as time goes by, the weirder it gets.

French-Algerian guitar visionary. Tour celebrating the release of Vividly and Pierre's 35th career anniversary. Pierre's latest album, "Vividly," was released in the US in October. It's a showcase of his rich and multi-cultural world, where guitar instrumentals share the spectrum with songs (in French and English). The words that Pierre sings are about freedom, tolerance, human interactions, fears, challenges, initiation and transformation, combined with original music that covers a vast ground where spirituality and geography are always combined in unique tapestries. Join Pierre for a preview of his new album and more!
