Levels of Practice Task Force 04-08-09
I am the Past President of ASCLS and a member of the Levels of Practice Task Force which is a collaborative project with participation from ASCLS, ASCP, CLMA and AMT. The task force has worked in two phases over the course of 3+ years to take a fresh look at the practice of clinicial laboratory science. We know there are a number of issues with the current practice model and decided to take a fresh approach that moved away from "what is" to what should be" and are now in the phase of "what can be".
As part of our task force work, we have developed a new practice model that starts at entry level with phlebotomy, waived testing and "lab assistant" duties, moves through the associate and bachelor degree entry levels, on to more advanced levels of the associate and bachelors degree practitioner and on to those with advanced degrees, including the proposed Doctorate in Clinical Laboratory Science, which is currently being developed.
We have placed 3 documents which summarize our work on the ASCLS website at http://www.ascls.org/currentevents/advocates/index.asp
The documents posted there include:
1. Background information about the task force process
2. The proposed model
3. A proposed implementation plan for the model.
We are looking for input and feedback about the work that has been done and the model we are proposing. Please participate in this forum and provide our task force with questions, comments and suggestions. We look forward to hearing from you!
