If my DNA that was submitted to Family Tree is correct, I am or could possibly be a descendant of Laird Archibald McNeill.  According to some genealogists in Cumberland County NC, Laird Archibald is the grandson of Donald McNeill of Crear 1st of Colonsay.  If this information is true, I would appreciate any and all information concerning this family of Colonsay. Thanks in advance for any information, I am most grateful.  I am very proud of my Scot roots.

I have documented my progenitor, Hector McNeill as being born 12/12/1785 in North Carolina.  I have found that his wife was living with her family on the Lower Little River area of Cumberland County NC in1800.  Although I have a DNA match with a descendant of Laird Archibald of Colonsay, I can not confirm that I am also a descendant.  There is another McNeill family that lived in this area that had a large family as Laird Archibald of Colonsay and some evidence that I may be related to this family.  The other family that I am researching is Archibald McNeill and he was born 1716 in Argyll, Scotland.  Both Archibald McNeill families lived in Cumberland County NC in the same period.  I am currently going over census records and deeds of Cumberland County in this period to separate these families and document the one that is my progenitor.  I understand this information may not help you but in the event I can document Laird Archibald of Colonsay as my progenitor, I will send all the information on his family.

Perhaps worth mentioning in this context is the fact that Archibald McNeill who married the daughter of the Earl of Granard and reputedly devoted himself to military life was in fact a bit of a rogue - hence his posting to Gibraltar!  In the course of his chequered career he ran up many debts, unaware that his cousin John had been quietly buying them up.  Eventually John, who was employed as Archibald's factor on the Colonsay property, presented the bills and asked for them to be redeemed - thus forcing Archibald to "sell" him the property.  In his turn, John used every opportunity to resist the claims of the original creditors and his success in this regard led to a trail of legal cases which enable one to unravel the whole rather sordid story.
