Hill 700
Looking for stories or information as to what when wrong when G 2/26 assaulted Hill 700 on or about April 6, 1968. I was a 81mm Squad Leader on Hill 558 on that particular day. I don't recall any prep fire by the 81's platoon or any other prep fire before the assault. It would appear that someone should have been held accountable. Does anyone know why no prep fire? WSB

This line from the Command Chronology possibly explains: "Constant check fires of the artillery caused by friendly aircraft hindered prompt
and timely fire support"

Bill, I was with Golf company from Sept 67 to Nov 68 and was the XO
on 6-7 April when we attacked hill 700. I've been back three times with
DPAA to search for any remains of Anthony Pepper and James Trimble, still
MIA. I can probably answer any questions you may have. Contact me

I have no direct knowledge of the Hill 700 experience... But my fellow Marine boyhood best friend Ron Vivona Golf 1st Squad Leader shared a great deal with me on what happened on 700 that day... at Phily Navy Hospital when I got home July 68... about when he and Piazza were sitting on a boulder prior to moving forward up 700 seeing McGraph firing on the enemy, getting killed, then Piazza being killed, then Ron getting hit by an RIP(lost both legs) being dragged into a hole by a Corpsman who was killed.. NVA tossing Tri Com's into his hole before passing out... Ron's name is on the Wall. S/F ReplyToMsg

In addition: I remember Ron telling me he'd been promoted to Cpl the day before 700 and made 1st Squad Leader... Ron, said Piazza was complaining about something being all wrong... Moments later they walked right into the NVA ambush.... NVA in Spider holes... some wearing Marine 782. Piazza killed instantly... Ron, McGraf, and Piazza were all from Long Island...
