IS IT DANGEROUS TO TRAVEL IN MEXICO?

Travel in Mexico carries no more inherent risk than traveling in the United States.

Driving is different than what you are probably used to. For example, left hand turning signals can have three different meanings depending on when and where they are used.

There are armed checkpoints to look for guns and drugs. These checkpoints do not pose a threat and should not be viewed as harassment. Petty thievery is fairly common in

Mexico so please leave valuables at home. Cameras and money should be kept securedand out of site at all times.

For aircraft, it is important that the Pilot-in-Command have all the necessary paperworkfor the aircraft, pilot credentials, and knowledge of flight plans and border crossing procedures for legal aircraft travel in a foreign country. This information is readily available from your flight coordinator or the Mexican Medical office.

Websites to look at are

http://www.bajanet.com or http://www.cia.gov and do a search for

WHAT ABOUT INSURANCE?

Should you rent a vehicle or drive your own car (or any form of motorized vehicle- i.e. boat, plane, motorcycle, jet ski etc.) it is your responsibility to have liability or fullcoverage vehicle insurance for Mexico and the US. This insurance is required for travel in Mexico. US insurance is not valid in Mexico. Insurance is available at border areas or via FAX. Pilots should check with their insurance agent to secure Mexican insurance before departure.

Medical Insurance- Check with your insurance company to see if you are covered out of the country. If you are not covered short term travel medical insurance should be purchased.

WHAT ABOUT CHANGING MONEY?

Please do not bring bills larger than 20's because it is very difficult to get change. Do not bring travelers checks to be used in Mexico as there are very few places that will change them for you. Small bills should be brought for personal use. Most merchants in Mexico will accept US bills, but if you prefer US dollars can be exchanged for Mexican pesos.

ARE IMMUNIZATIONS REQUIRED?

No immunizations are required to travel in Mexico, but members may want to get a tetanus booster. You can call Mexican Medical one month prior to you scheduled arrival to see if we have any knowledge of any epidemics in the area in which you will beserving. You may want to contact the U.S. State Department for current information concerning your ministry area at http://travel.state.gov and do a search for Mexico. You may also want to check out http://www.cdc.gov/travel .

WHAT ABOUT CONTACT IN CASE OF EMERGENCY?

If an emergency arises back home, in which you must get in touch with an individual in Mexico, you may contact our office in Pasadena 626 577 8096. Our office hours are 9:00 - 5:00,Monday through Friday. We do have an emergency number for our sister organization that runs many mission sites, Mexican Medical 619 463 4777. However it isusually a message number.

This is reserved for EMERGENCIES ONLY. Please be sure to leave the Mexican Medical phone number at home along with the name of the site you are going to. This will expedite finding you in case of an emergency. EMERGENCIES ONLY. Please be sure to leave the Mexican Medical phone number at home along with the name of the site you are going to. This will expedite finding you in case of an emergency.

There may not be access to phones while you are in Mexico depending on the mission where you are serving. It is suggested that you tell your friends and family that no news is good news. You can contact them as soon as you return to the U.S.A. Cell phone service, even though you may have international capability with your service provider, inthe Baja area of Mexico, is very "spotty" and expensive (about $2.00 per minute). So, it is recommended that you not plan on using your cell phone for communication.

WHAT ABOUT FLYING IN A SMALL AIRCRAFT?

If you are flying in a 4-6 seater airplane, as with any form of transportation, you are assuming certain risks, however your safety is of utmost concern to us. Please be advised that it is the sole responsibility of the pilot-in-command to determine if the weather conditions present or forecast are safe enough to warrant the flight. Mission aircraft are generally not equipped with deicing and thunderstorm avoidance radar and most are single engine aircraft. There is a possibility that the departure and /or the return flight(s) may be delayed, postponed or completely canceled to assure safe operations. Each passenger should recognize that such delays may occur and should prepare for such a possibility with home or work.

These planes are limited in the amount of weight they can take. PLEASE pack as lightly as possible using a soft duffle type of bag. Your full personal bag (including sleeping bag) should weigh no more than 20 pounds in order to have sufficient room/weight for equipment and supplies.  If you can bring 10 lbs. even better for safety. San Vicente Teams:

For this team you will need to fly in a private aircraft to Ensenada or on to the San Vincente valley directly to Rancho Llano Colorado airstrip, 7 miles south of the town of San Vincente. From San Diego International (SAN), ground transportation will be used to get you to the Brown Field airport (KSDM) so your private plane can pick you up there on the way to Ensenada or Tijuana enroute to the clinic site in San Vicente.  A taxi or super shuttle will be needed each way if local ministry partners are not available to drive you to the pick up airport.

SERVING IN MEXICO

GUIDELINES

Realizing that everyone goes to Mexico with different goals, motivations, and spiritual backgrounds, we submit the following in an effort to make the most of your time in Mexico. We trust that you will take these guidelines seriously and come with a proper, team-player attitude. The Mexican churches we work with dictate many of our guidelines to us. It is our desire to encourage them within their cultural setting and not to enforce or push our culture on them, after all we are guests in their country. With this in mind the following is submitted to you.

PROPER ATTITUDE

" ... your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus." Philippians 2:5

... your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus." Philippians 2:5

Fully committed to Christ and to each other.

Unselfish spirit.

Commit your energies and priorities to serving God and others.

Lay aside your desires for fun, relaxation and personal ego. This is not avacation or camp.

Have a positive outlook for learning from the Mexican people.

Be willing to learn something new about yourself and the world.

Be adaptable. You may have to exist in conditions that you do not enjoy.

Be flexible. You may have to work next to someone you may not like.

Do all things without complaining.

Be willing to do anything and look out for the needs of each other.

Be thankful God sent you.

CONDUCT

The people of Mexico form an opinion of Christianity on what they see in you; therefore, as individuals and as a group it is important to conduct yourselves in a godly manner.

Have positive spirit.

Group unity.

An exemplary Christian lifestyle.

Loud and boisterous demonstrations of enthusiasm are not appropriate in Mexico.

Be conscious of the impression your group will make.

Loud music, Christian or secular, can be offensive. Tape players, CD, IPODS, and  are allowed, but not suggested. They can be played very quietly in the dorm.

Do not descend upon an event like a group of tourist taking snap shots of everything. One designated photographer for an event is okay with the approval of the FLY-IN team leader. Ask your leader about picture taking in the local area.

Although some of these activities are permissible for Christians here, they are not permissible for Mexican Christians so please refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages, using tobacco products, and social dancing during your stay.

Male/Female Relationships

Male/Female Relationships

Among unmarried couples hand holding, kissing or other public displays of affection are not acceptable in Mexico. (Group members must refrain from this type of activity while in Mexico.)

Females must not go anywhere alone - always in groups.

Males and females must not go off together as a couple (Mexicans consider this a very suspicious action.)

Females must not flirt or give encouragement, in dress or manner, to Mexican males.

DRESS CODE

Avoid a sloppy appearance.

Our Purpose and Mission

Our Purpose and Mission:
To serve the people of Mexico, the USA, and other countries with our talents of professional health care, aviation, education, and evangelism while showing our love of them.  We wish to demonstrate to those we minister to that our spirits are in submission to the Lord, and that our complimentary health care services to them are unconditional and of the highest quality that is possible, for the resources that we have available.  By our acts of kindness and mercy we would hope to demonstrate the love of Christ to those that are served by us, and in doing so create a fertile field into which the Gospel may be planted and watered by those that follow.

Why Is Serving The Poor So Important?

Because... whoever is kind to the needy honors God (Pro 14:31—NIV). He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will reward him for what he has done (Pro 19:17-NIV).  A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed. (Pro 11:25--NIV) …then you shall take delight in the Lord…and ride upon the heights of the earth... (Isa 58:6-14-NRSV) ...And you will be blessed, because they can not repay you,  for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous (Luke-14:13-14--NRSV).

Because... He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor, his righteousness endures forever (2Cor 9:9-NIV).  …not only supplying the needs of God's people but is also over flowing in many expressions of thanks to God (2Cor 9:12-NIV).

Because...Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God (Acts 10:4-NIV). …Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto Me (Matt 25:40). He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well with him: was not this to know me? Says the Lord (Jer 22:16).

Because... you should not leave undone the more important things (Luke 11:42-NLT).  …give to the needy…and you will be clean all over (Luke 11:41-NLT).  He that gives unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hides his eyes shall have many a curse(Proverbs 28:27). He who oppresses the poor to increase his riches, And he who gives to the rich will surely come to poverty (Prov. 22:16-NKJV).

Because... the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command you, saying, You shall open your hand wide unto your brother, to your poor, and to your needy, in your land (Deut 15:11). …remembering the words of the Lord Jesus who said, It is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). …give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loves a cheerful giver (2Cor 9:7).

Because... Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and He will say: Here am I (Isaiah 58:9-NIV). …God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor (Acts 10:31-NIV). Blessed is he that considers the poor: the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble. The Lord will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth: and You will not deliver him unto the will of his enemies. The Lord will strengthen him upon the bed of sickness: You will restore him in his sickness (Ps 41:1-3).

Because... by this service by which you have proved yourselves, men will praise God for your obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. And their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you (2Cor 9:13-14-NIV).

Because... The righteous considers the cause of the poor: but the wicked regard not to know it (Pro 29:7).  …among my people are found wicked men…they have become great, and grown rich…they shine: … they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not…the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy they do not judge. …shall not My Soul be avenged on such a nation as this (Jer. 5:28-29)?

Because... the Lord Almighty says: Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another.  Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor… but they refused to pay attention…and would not listen to the law or to the words that the Lord Almighty had sent by His Spirit through the earlier prophets. So the Lord Almighty was angry. When I called, they didn't listen; so when they called,  I would not listen, says the Lord Almighty. I scattered them with a whirlwind among the nations where they were strangers (Zech. 7:9-14--NIV).

Because... this was the sin of … Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen (Eze. 16:49-50-NIV).

Because... If my people, which are called by My Name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. (2Chron 7:14) …break off your sins by being righteous, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor. Perhaps there may be a lengthening of your prosperity (Dan 4:27-NKJV).

Because... the needy shall not always be forgotten: the expectation of the poor shall not perish forever (Ps 9:17-18).  Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy (Pro 31:9).

Because... Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress…(James 1:27-NIV).  Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom He promised to those who love Him (James 2:5-NIV) …remember the poor…(Gal 2:10)

Because... What does it profit, my brethren, though a man say he has faith, and have not works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what does it profit? Even so faith, if it has not works, is dead, being alone (Ja 2:14-17).

Because... In Christ Jesus…the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. (Gal 5:6--NIV) This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? …let us not love with words or tongue, but with actions and in truth. This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in His Presence (1Jo 3:16-19-NIV).

Because... the Kingdom of God is... righteousness, joy and peace in the Holy Spirit... (Rom 14:17--NIV)  Your Father's good pleasure is to give you the Kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give to the poor; provide yourselves with purses that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail…For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Luke 12:33-34--RSV) ...By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so they may take hold of real life (1Tim 6:17-19--NLT).

Because... If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday. And the Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your desire with good things, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. (Isa 58:10-11-RSV) …you shall be called Repairer of the Breach…(Isa. 58:12-RSV) …and…ride upon the heights of the earth…(Isa 58:14-RSV)

Because... the noble man makes noble plans, and by noble plans he stands (Isa 32:8-NIV). And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work. As it is written, "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever." He…will supply and multiply your resources and increase the harvest of your righteousness. (2Cor 9:7-10--RSV)  only… remember the poor, which very thing I was eager to do (Gal 2:10-RSV).

Mobile Dental Unit and Medicines

From Dave Johnson November 2007
The MDU (mobile dental unit) is stocked very well for the dentists.  Of course there are times we may be short of specific items but over all God has provided supplies very well.  Dentists are able to come and do most procedures with the supplies in stock.  (Amalgam, Composite, Extractions, Cleanings and even an occasional Root Canal)  Many dentists like their own hand pieces so we encourage dentist to bring their own.  We do have two high speed and one low speed hand piece on the MDU.  The MDU also has a dental x-ray unit for use when needed.

We have and will continue to use some of the funds to purchase supplies (medicine and medical equipment) for the medical staff who serve with us in San Vicente.  I have the same problem you have in bringing drugs across the border.  I can not afford to lose my car and pay fines over such things as drugs.  As I wrote earlier we do have a fair supply of Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Amoxicillin, and to a lesser degree a variety of other treatment meds. I am very willing to use some of the funds to purchase needed meds but I am not a medical person and need some assistance to know the meds most needed by the Doc's.  We do find that each doctor has different favorite meds they like to use.  We also purchae all meds in Mexico.

We do need to have some funds for the mission base for on going expenses.  (City water, electrical service, taxes, improvements and repairs to the mission base.)  I believe God has allowed our base to make tremendous progress since we arrived but there is still much work needed to make the base more comfortable for teams and even for us.  We live in an old RV which many people have said they would not live in but we are very content.  We do have plans for a mission house which will belong to Mex Med and will allow a family to live in when we leave at some point in the future.  We plan to be here for several more years and will only move on when God directs and/or we are not physically able to serve in this ministry.

Volunteer waiver form for all volunteers to sign/return

The following form is to be printed, signed and mailed to the MCAM office before a trip along with the tax deductible contribution to our trip that helps cover travel expenses.

WAIVER AND LIABILITY RELEASE BY

“MANOS CON ALAS MINISTRIES” VOLUNTEER

THIS DOCUMENT AFFECTS IMPORTANT RIGHTS – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

1.                   MCAM - An All Volunteer Organization .

Manos Con Alas Ministries (MCAM) is a non-profit, religious, 501c(3) corporation that provides free medical and dental services for indigent persons in the State of Baja California Sur and (BCN) Norte, Mexico, and other areas and countries, through personnel that volunteer their time and services.   Because of the remote locations of the clinics through which MCAM dispenses its services, most transportation to and from the clinic sites is provided by charitable owner pilots of private aircraft who volunteer their time and aircraft.   I understand that instead of flying with MCAM volunteer pilots, I may make my own arrangements for transportation to the MCAM clinics by private or public air or surface transportation.

2.                   Assumption of Risk .

I understand that traveling to and from Mexico, and in particular traveling in private aircraft, necessarily entails a risk of grave bodily injury or death from pilot error or other circumstances.   Private aircraft flights can crash from mechanical failure, negligent maintenance, range and altitude limitations of aircraft, defects in runways and unimproved landing strips, interference by wildlife, limited or non-existent air traffic control and radar coverage in Mexico, limited approach procedures to controlled airports, lack of instrument approach and departure procedures at airports of use in Mexico, limited or non-existent search and rescue in Mexico, unfavorable weather or terrain conditions, latent defects in aircraft or other modes of transportation such   as van, bus, train, or car, the possibility of contaminated fuel, hostile environment or government activities, terrorist acts, lack of sufficient security for aircraft and personnel, or other causes, or a combination of causes.   I expressly agree to assume the risks inherent in travel to, from, and within Mexico, and other countries by private aircraft or otherwise.

3.                   No MCAM Insurance .

I understand and acknowledge that MCAM maintains no insurance.   It has neither liability nor workers’ compensation insurance.   Further, I understand and acknowledge that MCAM’s directors and officers may be immune to suit and that, other than the insurance carried by the MCAM volunteer pilot with whom I travel, there will be no other funds from which to recover in the event of an aircraft or vehicular accident.

4.                   Volunteer Pilot Insurance .

I understand and acknowledge that MCAM requires its volunteer pilots to have a minimum of $1 million aircraft liability insurance per aircraft accident, with sub-limits no less than $100,000 per passenger I understand and acknowledge that the liability insurance carried by the MCAM volunteer pilot with whom I travel will be the sole source of recovery available to me and my survivors in the event of an accident in which I sustain injuries or death.

5.                   MCAM Volunteer Pilot - The Final Authority As to The Safety of The Flight .

I understand and acknowledge that for practical reasons, MCAM may introduce me to a volunteer pilot for the purpose of flying to Mexico on a MCAM mission, but that MCAM makes no representations or warranties of the pilot’s experience or qualifications.   While MCAM requires its volunteer pilots to have adequate flight experience, and strongly suggests an instrument rating, and adequate Mexico cross country experience, and to meet all other requirements of the Federal Aviation Regulations, I understand and acknowledge that MCAM relies upon the veracity of its volunteer pilots to certify that all of MCAM requirements have been met.   I further understand and acknowledge that the MCAM volunteer pilot alone will determine the place and time of departure, the safety and airworthiness of his or her aircraft, the route or path of the flight, the adequacy of the weather, trip security, the altitude of the flight, and the various airports at which the pilot intends to land.  I further acknowledge that MCAM is not responsible for these choices and decisions made by the pilot. I understand and acknowledge that the volunteer pilot with whom I fly has the sole and ultimate responsibility for my safe transportation to and from Mexico for purposes of the MCAM mission.   I further understand and acknowledge that at any time I have the right to refuse to fly with any particular pilot who volunteers his or her services for the MCAM mission.

6.                   Understanding of Risks .

By signing this Waiver and Liability Release, I am indicating that I fully understand and am aware of the risks referred to above and that, after consideration of those risks, I wish to participate in the charitable activities of MCAM, including flying within an aircraft owned or flown by a volunteer pilot, without imposing any risk of liability on MCAM.

7.                   Release and Waiver of Liability .

Being fully informed of the risks of traveling to and from Mexico, and other countries to participate in a MCAM mission, and having agreed to assume those risks, I, on behalf of my heirs, successors, assigns, agents, employees, and representatives, hereby release and forever discharge:

a.                    MCAM and its directors, officers, volunteers, agents, attorneys and employees, and their families from any and all claims, debts, liabilities, demands, obligations, costs, expenses, actions and causes of action of every nature, character, and description, known or unknown, including personal injury and death, which I may now own or hold, or have at any time heretofore owned or held, or may at any time hereafter own or hold by reason of any matter, cause or thing whatsoever, occurred, done, omitted or suffered to be done, in connection with my travel by aircraft or other vehicle to and from clinics and medical activities presently or hereafter sponsored or organized by MCAM, its directors, officers, employees, members or volunteers, AND

b.                   Volunteer pilots who fly MCAM missions from any personal liability beyond the aircraft liability insurance coverage they provide in accordance with MCAM requirements, for any and all claims, debts, liabilities, demands, obligations, costs, expenses, actions and causes of action of every nature, character, and description, known or unknown, including personal injury and death, which I may now own or hold, or have at any

c.                     time heretofore owned or held, or may at any time hereafter own or hold by reason of any matter, cause or thing whatsoever, occurred, done, omitted or suffered to be done, in connection with my travel by aircraft or other vehicle to and from clinics and medical activities presently or hereafter sponsored or organized by MCAM, its directors, officers, employees, members or volunteers.

8.                   Waiver of California Civil Code Section 1542 .

Further, I am advised that California Civil Code § 1542 provides that:

A GENERAL RELEASE DOES NOT EXTEND TO CLAIMS WHICH THE CREDITOR DOES NOT KNOW OR SUSPECT TO EXIST IN HIS FAVOR AT THE TIME OF EXECUTING THE RELEASE, WHICH IF KNOWN BY HIM MUST HAVE MATERIALLY AFFECTED HIS SETTLEMENT WITH THE DEBTOR.

I understand and acknowledge the significance and consequences of California Civil Code § 1542 and hereby elect to waive the benefits of its provisions, with the intent that this release and waiver of liability shall include claims known or unknown, and unknown and unsuspected.

9.                   Full and Complete Release .

I understand and acknowledge that this Waiver and Release of Liability is intended as a complete and continuous release for all trips or transportation provided to me by MCAM volunteer pilots on or after the date that I sign this Waiver and Release of Liability.

10.               Right to Legal Counsel .

I understand and acknowledge that I may seek advice from legal counsel if I have any doubt before signing this Agreement.   By signing this Agreement I acknowledge that I have either sought the advice of legal counsel or wish to now intentionally waive the opportunity to talk to a lawyer by my signature on this Agreement.

11.               Understanding of This Document .

I understand and acknowledge that by signing this Agreement, I am confirming that I understand the language used in it.   I represent that if there is any word or phrase that I did not understand, that I have sought the advice of an attorney or other person for an explanation.   I acknowledge that neither I nor my heirs or representative will later claim in the event of injury, death or property damage, that I did not understand what I was signing in this Agreement.

12.               Indemnification Obligation .

I agree to hold harmless and indemnify (reimburse) the parties being released for any costs or attorney’s fees that may be incurred as a result of any challenge to this Release or legal action brought in contravention of this Agreement, in litigation resulting from my injury, death or property damage, in connection with any trip with MCAM.

13.               Full and Complete Agreement .

I understand and acknowledge that this Release is a full and complete agreement with regard to the risks I am taking by embarking on a MCAM trip.   No other documents, oral promises or other information can be used to modify or alter the terms of this Waiver and Liability Release.   This agreement is a fully integrated, final and complete statement of the agreement I have entered into.   If any provision of this Release is declared invalid, the remaining provisions remain enforceable.   There are four (4) pages in this agreement and Release, and I understand and agree with all 4 pages by initialing each page in the lower right hand corner by the page numbers.

An extremely safe and simple aircraft with proven reliability.
