Pensacola Reunion
Replies 0
Thanks to all -- especially Russ and Kathy -- who made the reunion so successful. All that hard and dedicated work is much appreciated. Joan and I had a great week. I'd list the others who were involved making it so meaningful: PX; Silent Auction; Hospitality Room and the back and forth to keep the snack food and the libation table and ice chests always at the ready; ladies luncheon; and so much more. Don't want to mention any names and leave someone out, but Tom Ford gave me $20.00 to mention his name and now I have done so. As Russ said, "We lost 4 members over the last year and 4 newcomers at their initial reunions." Wonder where they've been? Maybe Witness Relocation? For Khe Sanh Vets more than 90% of our lives are in the rear view mirror. If you can, come to San Antonio next year if you can. S/F Dennis

passing of a great Freind & brother
Replies 0
was going to post something yesterday but could not bring myself to do
so. It is sad to think it was 1 year ago yesterday that we lost Tommy. I
know we all miss him in our own way. However in the last 10-15 years we had
grown so close it was like a blood brother to me. Since his passing I lost
my true brother this past August then 24 hours later My brother in law
passed as well. So it has been a trying year for me. I guess that is way I
am looking so forward to this Reunion. Hope to see many of my brothers in
arm next week. For all who are coming have a safe trip and see you then.

Reunion Short Round
Replies: 1
LastReply: Peter
Hi-
I saw some email traffic which I
think had an issue with me using the term Gulf Of America in the Reunion
write up. I am the editor Bob Koury and you can contact me directly with
any comments or suggestions at [email protected].
BTW, our Commander In Chief ordered that we use that
term to describe the body of water. My personal oath required allegiance
to the chain of command and I still follow it regardless of politics.
There are still so many important things we have to
accomplish, like the scholarship fund, and outreach to the families of our
Fallen, I hate to see energy wasted on trivial stuff.

Sieges
Replies: 2
LastReply: Peter
Saw an interesting side note in the book "The Second World Wars” by
historian Victor Davis Hanson concerning Sieges. "…Following WWII, there
was once again the expectation in the age of guided missiles and motorized
armies that besiegers would no longer attempt to batter their way into
strongholds and cities. Yet both successful and failed blockades remained
common as ever…..Dien Brien Phu (1954) that did not, to the unconquerable
defenders at Khe Sanh (1968)…..
Nice observation there Mr. Hanson,
Thanks!

Just thought I'd share...
Ron Main... VMGR

For those who
remember the loss of VMGR 152 C-130 Feb 10, 68... but little about
152.
S/F
VMGR-152 Sub Unit
One was a Marine KC-130 Hercules detachment based at Da Nang Air Base,
South Vietnam, during the Vietnam War. The parent squadron, VMGR-152, was
stationed in Okinawa, Japan, and rotated personnel to Vietnam. Sub Unit #1
Da Nang, Chu Li, Phu Bai, An Hoa, Dong Ha, Khe Sanh.. Only Four C-130's did
all of the below, beginning with Operation Hastings 66, for which 152c recieved the
NUC.
Ron
Operations in Vietnam
- Location: The sub-unit's compound
was located on "Rocket Alley" next to the First Air Delivery Compound at
the west side of Da Nang Air Base.
- Missions: Using their Lockheed
KC-130 Hercules aircraft, the sub-unit performed a variety of critical
missions across the region from 1967 to 1975, including:
- Assault transport: Carrying
personnel, equipment, and cargo.
- Aerial delivery: Parachuting
supplies to ground troops.
- Flares: Dropping illumination
flares during night operations to support ground troops, with one source
indicating they dropped nearly 11,000 flares in a four-month period in
1967.
- Medical evacuation: Transporting
wounded and deceased personnel.
- High-tempo operations: At the
height of the war, the squadron flew as many as 900 missions a month.
- Presidential Unit Citation:
VMGR-152 was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for its service with
26th Marines during the Siege of Khe Sanh in 1968, during which the
sub-unit lost a C-130 that was shot down.
