When it comes to senior portraits, locations chosen should have some degree of meaningfulness to the person in front of the camera. It helps make a connection to the photos (now and in the future). As such "trendy” photos may be cute today but will have that "What was I thinking?” message tomorrow. You will never regret keeping it classic…I promise!
Ask your photographer to visit locations that you like to note when lighting is optimal. I prefer keeping lighting set up simple (natural light, reflectors, small off camera light) as I focus on capturing the emotions or intonations that make you unique. Side Note: Make sure you know what style you prefer on location vs studio images so you do not find yourself disappointed or have unrealistic expectations for perfection from your on location photographer. On location is a more casual, relaxed approach to photography. It will never replicate studio lighting or images in that environment.
Most people rely on the photographer to know amazing locations. As such, I’m always scouting for new and interesting areas. I’ve also found that making the location selection works bests when it’s a joint effort between client and photographer to assure the best outcome.Choosing locations that match your personality and style is what separates on location portrait sessions from studio photo sessions. On location photo sessions add interest, texture, and a story line to the photographs. As such, I prefer images that are not too closely cropped and show a at least a sliver of the surrounding environment.
One change that has boosted my confidence and efficiency when shooting on location and moving from one location to another is to establish not only a timeline but also what time of day each location is at its optimal for lighting. Of course that changes from season to season, but in Florida, it’s always sunny somewhere!
Sometimes it can feel mind boggling the number of things that need to be addressed in just one on location photo session. I have learned being organized and flexible is what it’s all about. Everyone relaxes when they feel that "organized, got this” vibe from the photographer. After all, how the photographer interacts with the client greatly impacts the quality of the images equally as much as any other factor. Keep it fun! Your clients will love you for it! So, photographers, no matter what issues you’re having back there behind the camera, from ISO to aperture to shutter speed, no one wants to know that….trust me, NO ONE! And remember: Just smile!
